You have $5000 and need to get a daily driver. But you must find a vehicle that is 10 years old or less. What’s the best option on your local Craigslist?

For me this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is tempting, but the all caps ad and the high mileage are a little off putting. Also, those pictures are not recent as our trees still have leaves here. I’d maybe go check it out and see if he really does have proof of extensive service, but I’m guessing I’d pass on it.

The next option is if I want to go with my namesake and keep the V8 theme going. This !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! seems well kept and is all I’d really need for a commuter and a truck. Mileage is starting to get a little high, but the body will fall apart far sooner than the drive train probably will.

Finally, this is the one I’d most likely go for. A !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It’s a manual and a hatch. It would definitely be the most fun to drive and probably the best commuter too.

Without the age restriction would’ve gone with 1st gen V70 but instead my answer is Volvo V50 1.6 DRIVe diesel . Not necessarily the most exciting car to drive but great fuel economy and you could register it as cargo van to reduce the running cost even more. To keep to the spirit of Craigslist I restricted the search to my region which means the linked car is the only one fitting the criteria.

Another option I’d consider would be Citroen C5 wagon equipped with hydropneumatic suspension but the only ones available nearby are 1.6 diesels which isn’t the engine option I’d go for.

The Citroen I assume. There’s an 08 one that’s within the budget but isn’t anywhere near and only maybe has the adjustable suspension option and then there’s another 08 model with petrol engine which has the right suspension but is about 1k over the budget.

BTW the sedan versions of these had concave rear window for that extra bit of French iness
